Bayer develops recyclate for car bodywork

Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) claims its new ‘green’ blend of PC and PET for automobile bodywork parts performs as well as virgin material. “By using the blend, which conserves energy and raw materials, our customers in this industry can operate much more sustainably without having to accept the compromises regarding material properties associated with most other recyclates,” said Wenz.

The PET and PC materials come from beverage bottles.

Makroblend GR 235M is designed for bodywork parts such as spoilers, skirts, antennas and convertible top compartments, and can be used as a substitute for sheet steel, aluminium and sheet mould compounds, says the firm. The material is economical because it yields moulded parts that need no reworking and is low density. Other advantages included low, largely isotropic thermal linear expansion, the ability to achieve tight gaps between adjacent assemblies for a seamless look, great toughness and high heat resistance, says BMS. /Source: European Plastics News/
